Early 1992, prompted by the frustrations relating to loans and borrows, United Airlines called upon the North American carriers to get together and discuss and resolve these issues. It was decided since the issues were common among all the carriers, it was best to meet and come up with solutions as a group. Thus, was the beginning of the North American Airlines Loan/Borrow Symposium (as it was called).
On March 11, 1992, the first meeting of the North American Airlines Loan/Borrow Symposium was held in Phoenix, Arizona. There were ten airlines in attendance: Alaska Airlines, America West Airlines, Continental Airlines, Federal Express, Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Trans World Airlines, United Airlines, United Parcel Service, and US Airways.
The North American Airlines Loan/Borrow Forum (as it is called today) is a vehicle for all members to work out the problems associated with day-to-day operations of loans and borrows. It is the spirit of cooperation that each member provides parts assistance to each other in order to help each other maintain a safe, reliable aircraft, as well as remain profitable.
Since its formation in 1992, the membership has grown to 34 airlines and continues to grow. In addition, the Forum has had the ongoing support and cooperation of the “heritage sponsors” – Aviation Concepts, Southern Pride Trucking, and Sterling Couriers.
The Loan/Borrow Forum is truly an excellent example of “working together” and has proven its value to the airline community.
